Artist Bio

Xueer Xu is an artist and designer from China, currently studying Information Experience Design at the Royal College of Art in London. With a background in visual communication, her practice spans sound, installation, moving image, publication and performance. She tells stories through moving image, and turns abstract ideas into forms that can be seen, heard and touched. Her work often begins with everyday sounds, images and encounters, and explores how we perceive what resists being named.

Artist Statement

My practice often begins with questioning things I once took for granted. I am drawn to the spaces in between: light and shadow, sound and language, belief and doubt.

In Chaotic Set, seventeen participants tried to capture short recordings in words and drawings, and performers read their scores back through their bodies. The harder we tried to describe a sound precisely, the vaguer it became. Yet the more the responses disagreed, the closer the sound felt. Curtain, made for an exhibition around Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s In Praise of Shadows, followed light as it gathered in folded Xuan paper and blurred the line between bright and dark. Escape from the Garden is a
film made with AI video generation, about someone who can neither believe in a dream nor let it go. Its turning point came from an accident: I asked for a departing train and got a crumpled car door.

That moment in Chaotic Set, when the body turned marks on paper back into sound, is where I want to go next. Practising contact improvisation has shown me a way of listening through weight, touch and breath. I want to bring that listening into work across sound, interactive devices and performance: pieces people step into, which turn out a little differently depending on who is there.
